2011 Bedroom Trends

In previous years the development of materials has been focused primarily on uni colours (Ivory and Vanilla) or wood grains (Wild Pear and Autumn Plum). Textured finishes until now have been a distant consideration. Over the past 6 – 8 months development in Textured surface finishes has been increased to meet the growing demand and we have seen the addition of Hacienda Black and White along with Driftwood to our range. With the introduction of textured surfaces this has given the decors more tactile depth and also added realism, bringing them closer to real wood veneer.

Our focus has been to make surface finishes and the decors more touchable, more “tactile” and ultimately more natural.

Ellmau Beech is now 20 years old

Beech remains a classic and it is hard to imagine a furniture industry without it. Its
warm character is highly versatile which means it can be used in all areas of the home.
One of our enduring best sellers, Ellmau Beech is now 20 years old and
we regard Tauern Beech as a next generation alternative. Important design
characteristics have been addressed and thus Tauern Beech includes more natural
elements such as knots and a greater interplay of colours, which allows for excellent
combinations with our new neutral grey tones.

Visit our showroom to see samples of the latest Tauern and the Classic Ellmau Beech.

Mixing and Matching

After years of talking about mixing and matching colours, it has finally become a mainstream trend, which can be found in both our traditional and modern ranges.

However, the key is the way in which different colours are combined. To make combinations simple and effective, we have recommend blending a simple woodgrain from either the oak or walnut range with a solid neutral colour such as Olive or Dakar.

Consumer Trends – Seeking Sanctuary

Although there has been much pessimism around the past few years, there seems to be a number of socio-economic trends that are having a positive impact on the furniture industry.

Firstly, negative equity and the tighter restrictions on mortgages are affecting more and more people in the UK. As a result it has become increasingly difficult to move house. This has changed the way we think about our homes. After years of viewing property purely as a money making investment, a more conventional attitude of making your house a home seems to be returning.

This changed of attitude coupled with historically low interest rates means that many of us are thinking about refurbishment and home improvement. A recent YouGov survey confirms this trend. When questioned about the current financial climate, 62 per cent of people said they were investing in home improvements including structural, decorative and interior design.

Secondly we have seen an increase in the amount of time people are spending at home. With the rise in fuel, food and energy costs, staying in has become the new going out as we look to save money. This trend has benefited many businessess like DVD rental company Lovefilm (sales up 34%) and takeaway giant Dominos Pizza (sales up 13%) in the past 12 months.

The widespread success and popularity of TV programmes like Come Dine With Me reflects this trend as more and more of us are choosing to host dinner parties with friends and families rather than eat out at restaurants.

We believe that as a result of spending more time at home, the desire to renovate and refurbish becomes greater as the home replaces the car as they key status symbol.

Electronically Opening & Closing Drawers

After a visit from our components supplier we are placing in our development pipeline a range of chest of drawers with electronically opening and closing drawers. Simply touch the drawer front to open and touch again to close. We’ll be developing a prototype and installing into our showroom over the next month or so. Check back for updates into our progress.
